Butchers’ firm blames tough trading conditions for its closure

Directors of a family-run butchers’ firm which closed their four shops without warning have blamed ‘trading conditions’ for their demise.

EA Bird & Sons closed shops in Mansfield, Sutton and Kirkby, as well as Worksop last Monday afternoon, telling shocked staff that the company had gone into liquidation.

In a statement, they said: “It is with great sadness that the directors of EA Bird and Sons Limited announce the decision to cease trading after 113 years.

As a family business that has employed and supplied local people for generations we feel proud to have sustained our business through many tough times, including two world wars and now, due to the trading conditions being no longer viable, we close our doors for the last time.

“It has become more and more difficult to compete with larger companies, and the ever-changing high street, and although we have always prided ourselves with the quality of our products and the fact that we have provided jobs for local people since 1902, we can no longer sustain the business.”

The business was started in Kirkby in 1902, and is thought to have employed around 35 people.
