Bramley Apple Festival fun lined up for October in Southwell

The Bramley Apple Festival, which celebrates the world-famous cooking apple first discovered growing in a garden in Southwell, is getting even bigger with events for all the family in and around the town on Saturday 20th October.

Sponsorship from Nottinghamshire County Council, Southwell Town Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council and the NFU, is enabling the festival to organise even more events of interest to all ages within the community.

They range from apple themed activities at the National Trust’s Southwell Workhouse to the Festival of Food and Drink in historic Southwell Minster. There will also be a large display of apples from John Hempsall’s Heritage Orchard.

Creative cookery demonstrations will use local food products as well as the famous Bramley Apple and new for 2012 is a flower arranging demonstration using fruit.

The WI Apple Day Stalls can be found in the Admiral Rodney and the annual Bramley Apple Painting Competition and Exhibition and Annual Apple Pie Competition are taking place in the Bramley Centre.

A welcome addition is the Southwell Folio Poetry competition which is holding its adjudication and prize-giving on Friday October 19 along with the Painting Competition prize ceremony at the Bramley Centre. The Painting Competition Exhibition, which opened on Monday 1st October is being staged in the library untilSaturday 20th October.

At 4pm on 20th October the library will host the crowning of this year’s Bramley Apple king and queen followed by the Minster School Ceilidh Band as a finale to the day.

Visitors are invited to celebrate all things apple at The Workhouse. Goffs are again sponsoring the apple-themed shop window dressing competition and there will be a special Bramley Apple race at Southwell Racecourse on the afternoon of Monday 22nd October.

“Come along and celebrate this special event in Southwell,” says Festival Chairman Roger Merryweather, who is a great-grandson of Henry Merryweather, who took grafts from a fine apple tree growing in Matthew Bramley’s garden in Southwell, which gave birth to the world-famous Bramley’s Seedling apple.
