A HOMELESS man who stole two bottles of vodka to keep warm after a night sleeping on the street was given a community sentence by magistrates.

Tadeusz Nikiel (37), of Dame Flogan Street, Mansfield, was detained by police after they searched him in the town’s Home Bargains store, recovering the alcohol worth £8.60 from his trousers and coat sleeve.

Sentencing the Polish national, the magistrate said: “If you continue on this path you will almost certainly end up in prison.”

Nikiel was given a six month community order with a requirement to address his alcohol problems.
