A jealous thug who repeatedly slapped, pushed and choked his partner because he thought she was having an affair has been jailed for 16 weeks.
Piotr Bednarek, 34, of York Road, Shirebrook, attacked Marzena Debowska during a prolonged onslaught which started in their home and spilled into the street, according to a Chesterfield magistrates’ court hearing on Wednesday, January 20.
Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said: “The victim originally came to join the defendant in the UK from Poland in 2013 but after living together there were sporadic domestic violence incidents which became more frequent in the last six months.
“It appears to have been over jealousy and on this occasion the victim was getting ready to go to work and had her back to the defendant as he was talking to her which angered him.
“She went into the bathroom and he blocked her way and then pushed her into the bath. He was shouting and as she got out of the bath he pushed her against a wall and he was choking her with his right arm.
“He then held her throat with his right hand and he hit her several times across her face with the palm of his hand.”
Miss Haslam explained Bednarek humiliated the complainant with insults and made further threats despite their three-year-old daughter being in the home.
Bednarek also grabbed his partner’s hair and ordered her to go to work, according to Miss Haslam.
The court heard how the complainant got out and tried phoning her employer but Bednarek took her phone and ordered her back into the house.
Miss Haslam said Bednarek returned the complainant’s phone but kept ordering her to go to her work at Sports Direct so she phoned a friend who turned up but drove away when the defendant confronted him.
Police arrived at the home and arrested Bednarek after the incident on September 8, last year.
Bednarek, who also works at Sports Direct, referenced taking a shotgun to his partner, according to police, and he made a gesture as if he was shooting someone.
The defendant, who has no previous convictions, was found guilty of assault by beating during a previous trial hearing in November, last year.
Defence solicitor John Wilford said: “He’s got personal issues which he has struggled to come to terms with and he has become estranged from his family and has become isolated.
“He has had difficulties controlling his emotions but the relationship with his partner is now at an end.”
District Judge Andrew Davison sentenced Bednarek to 16 weeks of custody and ordered him to pay £250 compensation, £200 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
He told Bednarek: “There is no remorse and you have shown none throughout. I am told you have a good character with no previous convictions but people with a good character don’t slap around their partners.”
Bednarek was also given a four year restraining order.
