SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has announced major plans to extend one of its Mansfield stores by an extra 40,000sqft, Chad can exclusively reveal.
The company wants to create further retail space at its Jubilee Way South supermarket by building an extension — which would see the total floor space expand to 100,000sqft.

Tesco bosses will hold a public consultation into the plans on 27th November but the move has already sparked outrage with Mansfield district councillor Nick Bennett.

He told Chad: "It just seems wrong — when is it going to stop? Supermarkets are strangling the life out of the town centre. Ok, they bring new jobs but what about all the jobs that are being lost around the town?

"It is only 2006 since they built it so why do they need to extend it yet again? If this gets passed, it is going to be a disaster for Mansfield."

But a Tesco spokesman told Chad the proposed store extension would create 150 new jobs and was being planned in response to what customers wanted.

He said: "It has been very successful since it opened and it does get very congested. Some of the feedback from customers is they would like to see more space.

"We see it as a very positive move in terms of reacting to what customers have asked for."

The spokesman said the company wanted to extend the store so it encompassed three empty units next to it and build a mezzanine level.

He said a planning application would be submitted within a month of the public consultation if there was a good response to it and the move would allow the store to stock a wider range of goods.

Mansfield MP Alan Meale told Chad that while he thought the Chesterfield Road South Tesco was damaging the town centre, he thought the planned extension was 'common sense' because it would use the empty units.

He said: "That site has come back as a new focus for shopping. I don't think the extra space at Oak Tree Lane is going to be problematic because there's job creation. Everything is squeezed into the store really badly and it is packed out."

The news come just a week after Sainsbury's were given planning permission to extend its Nottingham Road store by an extra 3,104sqm.

The consultation event takes place in the store on 27th November and a display about the plans will remain there for a week.

It seems that as money is no object to creating and extending Tescoland - maybe they'll chuck up a leisure centre on the brewery site for nowt to replace the one they demolished?

The brewery site would be perfect for a decent leisure center. It's central, easy to get to and it's not something that would disrupt local residents lives. I spose the site is going to sit empty though until the economy picks up and they might just be able to sardine some houses on it.

Mr Meale - have you not noticed the rubbish which collects outside the Tesco store which spreads accross the Oak Tree Heath? Do you know that Tesco refuses to pick it up if its outside their boundary? Have you not noticed the amount of traffic the residents of Oak Tree have to put up with on a daily basis? When did you last do a weekly shop anyway?

Listen to the constituents of Oak Tree _ we dont want it!!!! Dont do a Tony Eggington and sell your soul to the Tesco Devil!!!

well done for one of our local politicians to stand up and be counted instead of just sleep walking into another super superstore from the domination of nottinghamshire which is tesco.
how many more super markets do we have to put up with ?
and how much longer are we going to allow the killing of of our town.
we will soon have no mansfield market left at this rate.

What do you exspect from a TORY councillor Thatcher closed the pits in the 80s Nick Bennetts against super markets. 55 job for Sainsburys over 100 at Tescos were can you get that extra work force dont worry we will all be out of work, and starve to death

Bullfarm Bluesman,

Sorry Farm. 20/11/2008 16:16:26
Sorry for 6. To recap, Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's are here and whatever the politics, it would be very difficult to oppose 'reasonable' plans. The esteem that MARS is held in some parts of the Planning Department ensured Sainsbury's 'got through'.
I'm sorry to be critical of Councillor Nick Bennett. I'm also sorry that he did not attend the crucial meeting re. greenfield development.
I apologise to Ms. Lambourne.
I'm sorry to continue to oppose 'unreasonable' development on MARS, especially with all the brownfield available.
I'm sorry that the Green Dragon Pub has just been demolished.

bullfarm bluesman you sound like a politician yourself,
reasonable plans what 70 % increase ?
i think not
40.000sqf extra for tesco ?
resonable plans i think not
and as for keep slandering everyone.have you ever heard of facts instead of spouting off.
i too was upset that councillor bennett was not at the crucial meeting and i wrote to him and we met and he explained to me why he was not able to attend that meeting for personal reasons of which he explained to me in detail but i will not reveal here but i would suggest contacting him and im sure he will explain.
instead you decide to keep spurting off and slagging people off
do your research and use facts instead of half truths
after all politicians are humans as well and do have family problems
so please grow up and do your resarch
