Nottinghamshire County Council leader Coun David Kirkham has created the new role as part of a cabinet reshuffle following his re-election to the top job by the council's Labour Group earlier this month.

Coun Chris Baron — who is currently the cabinet member for finance and property — is expected to be given the new portfolio for environment and sustainability at the council's annual meeting on Thursday.

Said Coun Kirkham: "I am delighted to be leading Nottinghamshire County Council for a further 12 months.

"I've taken the opportunity to refocus my cabinet for the coming year by creating a new cabinet role to raise the profile of green issues in the county's work.

"My team is focused on making a real difference for Nottinghamshire people to make sure our county is one of the best and greenest places to live and work."

The finance and property portfolio will now be split between deputy leader Coun Mick Storey and Coun John Stocks, the cabinet member for people and performance — which means the number of cabinet members remains the same.
