'I walked in wanting to believe . . . I walked out more convinced than ever that there really is life after death, that 'the spirit lives on forever'.
Stephen Holbrook, a hairdresser for 17 years, now styles himself a clairaudiant ('I hear voices but I only see a blur') medium - a congested telephone exchange for spirits wanting to get their messages across to the living.
He has been labelled Britain's most accurate medium and on the evidence of his sell-out show, it is a label the flamboyant, yet sensitive showman deserves.
Afterwards, as he signed autographs and happily chatted to members of the 400-strong audience, Stephen - who discovered the gift as a nine-year-old when his granddad came to his bedside immediately on his death - admitted that he had not known his show was to be reviewed by Chad.
He had no need to worry. His 90-minute performance was packed full of remarkable detail as one person after another was given a detailed message from loved ones who had recently died - names, dates, circumstances and even a tattoo all falling into place
How did he know that one woman's sister had passed away from breast cancer, her name and that a surviving sister had two children?
How did he know that one woman had two handbags belonging to her deceased mother . . . another was upset listening to music in the car travelling to the show . . . and another whose mother had recently died was joining a brother already on 'the other side'?
As he moved from one moving message to another, the man who predicted close friend Jane Mcdonald's rise to TV fame showed tact, an eye for entertainment and a quick wit, turning tears to laughter.
Stephen has written three books, now retired from hairdressing and shuns the chance to become a star of the small screen himself despite several offers.
He told me after the Chad-organised event: "I am happy to do this, I am happy where I am. I don't need to be on TV.
"People are only ever 100% convinced when the message is for them, that's natural. But the people who were here tonight saw it for themselves and can't explain it away.
"It is an emotional rollercoaster, laughter one minute, tears the next."
His shows have also raised thousands of pounds for charity. The Wakefield Hospice benefited by £47,000 from collections at his shows over the past three years and he is now raising cash for Macmillan Nurses.
Chad has organised two more evenings with Stephen Holbrook this year, on Thursday 21st June at The Towers Botany Avenue, Mansfield, and on
Monday 22nd October back at the Civic Centre, Mansfield.Follow the link on the homepage for more details.
