A NUMBER of staff at Mansfield's Samworth Church Academy are being made redundant, it has been revealed.
The academy is cutting seven teaching posts from its staff to deal with a 'significant budget deficit' it inherited when it took over the former Sherwood Hall School last September.

Samworth chiefs says the teachers will be leaving through voluntary redundancies but it cannot say exactly when their jobs will end.

Principal Michael Griffiths said: "We inherited a situation that required a clear solution for the long term benefit of the academy.

"Our staff have responded to the situation with great professionalism and we are delighted that the necessary redundancies of teaching staff will be achieved on an entirely voluntary basis."

He said the staff had been aware of the issues with the budget for a number of months.

A state-of-the-art new academy is currently being built on the other side of the school's site, despite concerns from local people about how close it will be to their homes.

"necessary redundancies"

pft!

Necessary to protect profits ehh? What about the necessity of education? What about the staff's necessity to pay their bills and buy their food?

How is it that a company (that could probably afford to make a loss if they planned for it) can put staff in this position (who can't afford to). Why is it okay for employees to have to suffer to protect profit? Just so the company can "continue to grow" or "provide jobs for the future". Jobs that will be just as quick to go when the circumstances roll round again.

The only people this protects is the private investors. The people who CAN afford to take a cut in their cash flow.

The very idea of these privately funded academies sends shivers down my spine.

As a former employee of Sherwood hall I myself had seen this coming along time ago.
I decided to leave and find further employment within the local education authorities rather take my chances with the Samworth Academy.
As i like the people who have had to take "voluntary Redundancy" have bills to pay and a family to look after.
