THE devastated family of Victor Massey, who died after police were called to a ward at King's Mill Hospital last week, have welcomed news that an independent investigation will be held into the conduct of the officers.
Mr Massey (54) was being treated in hospital for a stomach complaint but died last Monday night after staff called police to an incident on Ward 7.
It is understood Mr Massey, of Palmerston Street, Westwood, died while being restrained by police —
with some reports suggesting officers may have used CS gas during the incident.
The family's solicitor Paul Balen, of Freeth Cartwright, issued a statement on Friday saying the family welcomed and looked forward to contributing to the investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as well as the coroner's inquiry.
"My clients have serious concerns at his treatment by staff at the hospital and by the police, which need to be fully investigated and addressed," said Mr Balen.
"My instructions are that everyone who knew Vic appreciated what a quiet and gentle man he was. He was a hardworking, devoted husband, father and grandfather who would not even harm a spider."
He said staff had told the family that Mr Massey had been making progress and it was hoped he would be released this week.
The man leading the IPCC investigation, Neil Lester, told Chad: "This was a tragic situation where a man lost his life and our thoughts are with this man's family and friends at this time."
He said the investigation, which will use officers from Nottinghamshire Police Professional Standards Unit, will try to establish what actions were taken by officers at King's Mill and whether they had an impact on Mr Massey's death.
