WARSOP MP John Mann has welcomed a decision to strike off two solicitors found guilty of misconduct over compensation payouts for sick miners.
James Beresford (58) and 52-year-old Douglas Smith, of Beresfords Solicitors in Doncaster, made millions of pounds from personal injury claims for miners under the coal health compensation scheme - including hundreds of pit workers from Nottinghamshire.

The pair were hauled before the Solicitors' Disciplinary Tribunal in London to answer 11 allegations of 'serious' professional misconduct.

Speaking soon after the decision was made, Mr Mann issued a statement saying he had been vindicated in his campaign to get Beresfords struck off.

"Beresfords represent all that is wrong with today's money-driven professional classes," he said.

"Jim Beresford is a modern-day King Midas, believing that everything he touched would turn to gold, but ending up as the man who would not listen.

"Even now Beresfords have failed to pay back many miners who they duped. I trust that cheques with compensation will be in the post by Monday."
