MANSFIELD MP Alan Meale has rebelled against the Labour Government by voting for a Tory motion calling for post office closures to be halted.
He was among 19 Labour MPs who backed the Conservatives' call for the suspension of 2,500 closures nationwide.

The motion was narrowly defeated in a vote last Wednesday, but Mr Meale was the only Labour MP in this area to vote with the opposition.

Mr Meale told Chad: "I have campaigned on this issue. I have made my views very clear and I think Post Office Ltd has been atrocious in its approach to this.

"The Post Office seems to be intent on closing down most of the network and not following the proper procedures with proper consultation.

"There's a clear need for post offices but they are still closing them. It is a service and it should be maintained.

"I am not a regular rebel, but on post offices I have campaigned for them and made my views perfectly clear. I said I think it should be halted because I believe that."

Mr Meale added that he wanted a review of the senior management at the company, but said he did not want to comment on his Labour colleagues who voted with the Government.

Fourteen branches across Mansfield, Ashfield and Bolsover have been axed under the closure programme.

But bosses insist the closures are necessary to make the network sustainable because it is losing £4m a week.

Phyllis Armitage,

Well done Alan!

Its a pity my MP didn't do similar, but he's far too bothered about his position in the Party to care about Post Offices!

Forgetting his Stags/Haslam association, I think it's actually the other way Bramble. When was the last time he voted against his own Govt. I actually can't remember the last time I saw his pic on front page of Chad (remember I said, forgetting all things Mansfield Town-related).

Funny how the closure programme is national news now branches in the Home Counties and southern areas are facing the axe. Same old story with this badly-run, selfish, crime-ridden, drug fuelled country - everything evolves around London and the southern softies!!!

At last big Al shows us he has some balls, the way the post office is being re-organized is a joke.

Mr Meale actually went up in my estimation when I read this - not that that was difficult though! Well done on this one Alan but I still can't forgive you for the part you've played in the demise of the Stags.

Don't believe what this man says.
He voted against our right to vote on the EU Treaty.
