A SON who battered his 83-year-old mother to death at their home in Mansfield has been detained in hospital indefinitely.
Fifty-eight-year-old Anthony Clapperton was severely depressed and mistakenly thought he would be jailed and his mother put out on to the street because of his claims for attendance allowance.
Nottingham Crown Court was told he thought he had misrepresented the facts when making a claim which led to her being paid £200 a month.
Clappeton, of Linton Close, admitted the manslaughter of his mother Margaret on the grounds of diminished responsibility on 18th June.
On March 28th he drove to Mansfield Police Station, with blood dripping from his hand and over an intercom told an operator: "I think I've killed my mother, I just couldn't cope any more."
Officers found her body in the lounge with at least 14 impact injuries.
Her son, a computer technician, had hit her to the head with a computer tower then a hammer as she sat on a sofa.
Judge John Milmo said that Clappeton, who had a psychotic mental illness, had come to the conclusion he had to kill his mother so she would not be out on the street.
