THE historic headstocks and baths at the former Annesley Colliery site are to be demolished - despite opposition from residents and conservationists.
Ashfield District Council's Planning Committee agreed, after a two-hour debate, that the bath house and headstocks could be knocked down to make way for a new housing development at a meeting tonight (Thursday).

Persimmon Homes is behind the wide-ranging scheme, which would include houses, shops and a health and visitor centre.

The buildings are in a conservation area and evoked a strong reaction from residents and conservationists at the meeting, who said retaining the buildings was vital for the area's mining heritage.

But councillors granted Conservation Area consent, after hearing it would cost up to £227,000 to refurbish the headstocks, and then cost a further £16,000 per annum to maintain it.
