PUPILS preparing for their first term at Mansfield's new Samworth Church Academy will get their new school uniform for free –– thanks to a Government cash handout.
Bosses at the academy –– formerly Sherwood Hall School –– say they will provide the uniform for the first year after receiving the grant to splash out £60 per student for clothing.

Said principal Michael Griffiths: "We are going to have high expectations about uniform standards and how the children should be presented at all times.

"By providing uniform up front it will help parents to keep up with what is expected from their children. We have actually spent over the £60 per head, but the parents will still get it all for free."

Pupils will be provided with a blazer, tie and V-neck sweater, along with sports kit that includes shirt, shorts tracksuit trousers, polo shirt and socks.

It means parents will only need to buy a white shirt or blouse, trousers and shoes for their child, which academy bosses believe should cut down on costs.

Added Mr Griffiths: "It also means that pupils will have no excuse for not wearing the correct uniform or having kit for physical education.

"The youngsters will be able to look smart from the beginning and we feel we will get this investment back from them."

And the school says that in following years it will set the price for uniforms, provided by a company called Price and Butler, at affordable levels for parents.

What a great idea, now if they could only sort the shambolic uniforms that I see Queen Elizabeth's pupils wearing. Standard school uniform worked whilst I was a kid so what is so different now. Some of them are downright shocking, their parents should be ashamed to send them out of the house looking like that.
