CONTROVERSIAL budget cuts of £28.7m have been given the go-ahead by councillors after a marathon meeting which went on into the early hours of today (Friday).
Tories at Nottinghamshire County Council say they must make the savings in 2010/11 to meet an election pledge to freeze Council Tax and an increased demand for services for older people and vulnerable children.

A protest took place at County Hall ahead of the full council meeting and opposition politicians put forward alternatives to many of the savings, saying Council Tax should be increased to prevent some of them.

But Conservatives outnumbered them to vote through the plans, which include:
  • Closing some day centres.

  • Axing 468 jobs.

  • Increasing care charges for the elderly and disabled.

  • Selling off care homes.

  • Shutting all County Contact points.

  • Closing Sutton's Household Waste Recycling Centre.

  • Cutting funding for extra activities at Ollerton's Dukeries Complex and Sutton Centre Community College.

  • Increasing charges for the Meals at Home service.

And they laughed while doing it.

I witnessed this meeting, and the Tories were an absolute disgrace. Laughing and joking amongst themselves while the Labour members were pleading with them not to sell off the old peoples' homes and close disabled daycare. They tried to heckle down the Liberals too.

It was a budget of disgrace and I'm so angry.

Having bailed out at Tea and cake time all I will say that, with only 100 turning up outside, and a fragmented opposition, it's gonna be a long 4 years of Conservative Financial Responsibility at the Death Star.
Who are "the people of Nottinghamshire" and/or "Rent-a-mob" ?
Dinosaur words form the Tories and dinosaur ideas from neu labour!

It will not change the voting results at County Hall or at MDC but LABOUR have today have won the bye elections in Sherwood, Portland District Council seats and Mansfield South County Council with convincing majorities. So people are sending a message at District, County and national levels about what they think.

Re: By-elections, how badly do Labour need to perform for Mansfield folk (to get off their fat backsides &) to place their x elsewhere?
P.s. A 20-24% turnout should be embarrassing for all concerned in those areas.

As the song goes 3 out of 3 ain't bad.
This pie sure tastes good. Is this a referendum on MIF and/or Mystic Egg?

    Mr Mansfield,

Interesting interview with Jason Zad-wotsit on Mansfield radio earlier. He was saying that all the opposition parties - Labour, Libs AND Independents - put forward other less damaging savings which were dismissed by the tories.

Does this finally put to bed the accusations that Independents are tories in disguise? I doubt it, because Labour supporters will keep pedalling in a sad attempt to score political points. Not all floating voters will fall for it though guys.

Come off it mr Mansfield. The indies are more political than any of the honest political parties.Perhaps its because they are made up of ex(failed)political party members. As far as I am concerned they would have only voted against the cuts out of political expedience.Lets hope the floating voters have floated away from the party that stands on a ticket to reduce cllrs expenses. Then collect two lots of allowances, double standards to say the least!

    Mr Fizzer ,

    Well said Plebs!

But the Indies are not failed politicians, but failed business people who couldn’t make a living using their own monies but now use the public purse to furnish their lavish life styles. The ordinary good honest local councillor who fights for their communities does not get a look in, and are scoffed at by those who sit with the real power!

Fizzer and pleb, both small minded socialists who beleive that everyone in public life should do it for nothing. Would they?

As for failed business men, some may be but so what, if Labour were in charge would they work all the hours the Indies do for nothing at all? NO they wouldn't.
They certainly didn't when in power before 2003, what few hours they were at the Civic Centre were spent in the subsidised bar.

At County Hall none of the Independent Group are failed businessmen or women. In fact, my research tells me that only two of eight are business people and certainly not failures. They work hard in both ares of their working life and will continue to do so.

In all walks of life there are good and not so good, never has that been more true than with the Labour Party.

Lets get away from individuals lets examine what the Independents record is and there is not a lot to brag about they may not be failed business people but they have failed Mansfield and that is why the electorate voted the way that they did in the Thursdays bye elections.
