CONTROVERSIAL budget cuts of £28.7m have been given the go-ahead by councillors after a marathon meeting which went on into the early hours of today (Friday).
Tories at Nottinghamshire County Council say they must make the savings in 2010/11 to meet an election pledge to freeze Council Tax and an increased demand for services for older people and vulnerable children.
A protest took place at County Hall ahead of the full council meeting and opposition politicians put forward alternatives to many of the savings, saying Council Tax should be increased to prevent some of them.
But Conservatives outnumbered them to vote through the plans, which include:
Closing some day centres.
Axing 468 jobs.
Increasing care charges for the elderly and disabled.
Selling off care homes.
Shutting all County Contact points.
Closing Sutton's Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Cutting funding for extra activities at Ollerton's Dukeries Complex and Sutton Centre Community College.
Increasing charges for the Meals at Home service.
