WELL-KNOWN celebrity naturalist David Bellamy has added his backing to a campaign against plans to build an incinerator near Rainworth.
He has joined members of protest group People Against Incineration (PAIN) who are fighting proposals by Veolia Environmental Services to build the facility at the former Rufford Colliery.

PAIN member Coun Allen Tift, who is also a Newark & Sherwood district councillor, told Chad that another member had contacted Mr Bellamy and he had been happy to support the campaign.

Coun Tift said: "It highlights the environmental impact we feel it is going to bring about. Hopefully we will be able to get him up here to visit us."

He added that the group may contact further celebrities who are interested in the environment to gain their backing.
Veolia submitted plans for the incinerator, which would burn up to 180,000 tonnes of waste a year and generate enough electricity to power 15,000 homes, last month.

And bosses at the company insist they will work to limit the effect of the incinerator on the environment and local wildlife habitats.

The next meeting of PAIN takes place on Thursday 17th January at Potters Snooker Hall in Rainworth at 7pm.

To comment on the application, email development.planning@nottscc.gov.uk or write to Director of Communities, Nottinghamshire County Council, Trent Bridge House, Fox Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 6BJ. The deadline is 31st January.

"another member had contacted Mr Bellamy and he had been happy to support the campaign" - He's not likely to say no is he now.
"He added that the group may contact further celebrities who are interested in the environment to gain their backing." - Common sense prevails at last.

Just build the thing anyway.....

Nobody wants an incinerator, especially close to where they live but the problem is unless we recycle all of our rubbish it's got to go somewhere. The Rainworth site isn't that far from Belgrano towers but I'd rather rubbish was burned to make electricity than be burried in the ground to rot at a landfill site anyday.

those are not the only choices - have you not kept up with suggesyions for anaerobic digestion - why burn kitchen waste when it should be composted?!

I totaly agree with the comments made by Shlomo, Incineration is not the only form of technology, Anaerobic Digestion is just one of other forms of technology, that could be used instead of a burning Incinerator that will have Health & Environmental impacts, it is also worth mentioning that Anaerobic Digestion is widely used across Europe
