A tremor registering 4.8 on the Richter scale struck homes across the UK shaking houses, rattling windows and setting off al
arms nationwide.
Experts believe the latest quake lasted for around 10 to 15 seconds and say it was one the biggest tremors to be felt in Nottinghamshire since 1750.
Dozens of calls were made to the local emergency services following the tremor which centred on Dudley, in the West Midlands as residents tried to establish what had happened.
Mansfield Woodhouse resident John Grout (62), of Leeming Lane South, was one of many local residents to be woken the earthquake.
"I was asleep and then my bed suddenly started vibrating," he told Chad. "I was awake for about an hour and a half after that and I couldn't work out what it was it was very worrying."
Monday's rumble was the second earth tremor to hit Nottinghamshire within a year.
For last October many residents experienced a quake which centred on Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.
