VISITORS to Mansfield town centre will be in a spin when a new 144-seat big wheel arrives in the Market Place this month.
The 35m-high structure will take seven days to put up and another week to take down and has 24 cars seating up to six people each.

Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton will join other dignitaries for the first five minute ride of the wheel when the attraction opens on 10th October and he hopes it will be a big hit with residents and visitors.

"We think it's going to be a great attraction for the town," Mr Egginton told Chad.

"We've got it for four weeks and hopefully with the nights closing in now, people will enjoy having it. We've just got to hope we get some good weather during these autumn nights.

"To give people an idea of the height, it's about the same as three double deckers stacked on top of each other –– I'd imagine people will underestimate how big it is until they see it for themselves.

"It's a chance for them to get a different perspective on some of the sights of the town.

"I am sure it will bring the tourists in too –– I think anyone visiting nearby will say why don't we go and visit the wheel in Mansfield?"

Mr Egginton says plans to get the wheel in Mansfield followed the success of a larger wheel in Nottingham city centre earlier this year.

"After seeing how well they did with the wheel in Nottingham we talked about the possibility of a wheel coming to Mansfield," he said.

"It turned out we couldn't get it as quickly as we would have liked but with the weather as it has been, the delay has probably worked out for the best."

The wheel will stay in the town until 8th November and tickets are £3 or £2 for under 5s.

That sounds good...

The only thing is, why is here in October and November...just look at the weather outside.

Why could this have not been part of summer in the streets?

I presume this wheel may just be staying in mansfield at a convienient time after appearing at Nottinghams Goose fair?

Mr Eggington seems very pleased with attracting the ride to our town, but it would be interesting to know if there is any cost to council tax payers, or is this ride being funded purely by the fee charged to users of the ride?

If it is being subsidised by the council, then surely a question has to be asked about the seasonal timing of the ride?...

Some answers please MDC.

I'd guess that because there's a charge attached to the use of the ride it will not have cost the tax-payer anything. The company installing it will just take 100% of the profit.

Well Mr Egginton, if the structure truly is 35mtrs then the people will 'underestimate' its height using your description. As double deckers are about 4.2mtrs high you would need 8, stacked on top of each other to be somewhere near.

not being funny but whats the point? no turist are going to see this thing because they will come of the motorway drive through pleasley, get scared and go away. instead of wasting money on idiotic ideas like this why dont the council concentrate on finishing some of the projects that actually need doing. and i dont mean a silly giant feather!

oh my god what is the council thinking .....this is gonna be 4 weeks us parents r gonna have to keep our kids away from town as all we r gonna hear is tantrums n heartache cos they wanna ride the wheel all day everyday .....have these ppl not realised times are hard and money is tight without them adding to it. how about putting money 4 these things to better use like helping the not so well off ppl of mansfield get through the ever looming recession we are facing.

No...I think most have got the wrong end of my argument...

If the council have speant money on this project?

I would question the time of year...and more importantly, why attract people to the town centre, when we are actually closing down public toilets because we can't fund them?...great idea Mr Mayor...invite more people, and have no toilets!...it's a joke!!!!
