THE MANSFIELD branch of children's clothing company Adams closed on Monday as the national economic downturn claims yet another victim.
The firm, which celebrated its 75th anniversary last year, announced the closure of 111 stores across the country earlier on Monday morning – seeing a total of 850 job losses.

Among those included in the closures are Mansfield Four Seasons Shoppin
g Centre branch, and Nottingham's Broadmarsh Shopping Centre's store.

On Saturday the Mansfield branch of High Street giant Woolworths shut down.

  • End of an era as Woolworths closes

The Adams closures follow the company's initial announcement that administrators Pricewaterhouse Coopers would be taking control of the company on Christmas Eve.

Said Rob Hunt, joint administrator and partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers: "Following our appointment and in light of the current downturn being experienced on the high street, it is with regret that it has been necessary to effect the closure of 111 stores throughout the UK as of today.

"Unfortunately, this will inevitably lead to a number of job losses and 850 people across the company will be made redundant with immediate effect. My team and I will be doing all we can to help these employees at this difficult time."

I always remember my mum refusing to buy me clothing from Adams as a child, always saying because of the price. I'm starting to think that the stores that will not survive this year are those that are overpriced for the goods they sell. Primark, Asda and other cheap clothing makers have put places like Adams to shame. Why would I buy a coat for £30 when I can get a simlar one for just £10? Do the math.

Same goes for wedgewood china, if you can justify selling a plane white plate for £50 on name alone then maybe your not suited to this economy? People are cutting back & making use of cheaper stores. Asda and Tesco have a wide range of good childrenswear as well as adult wear, so why pay more? I don't care about names, I care about being able to buy 2 of the same item to ensure I have enough, to be able to buy a range of different items for £30 instead of just one.

The only people I feel sorry for again are the workers.
