MEMBERS of Welbeck Colliery Welfare FC are celebrating after the club was awarded almost £500,000 from the Football Foundation.
The bumper cashpot will help provide new changing rooms, a pavilion and new pitches as well as securing the long-term future of the club.
It is also hoped that the funds, secured by Kirkby-based consultants Fundsport UK, will become a hub for the community and bring the area together.
Club chairman Graham Hall, who has been working towards obtaining the windfall along with Welbeck Colliery Miners' Welfare and other community groups for more than nine years, said he was delighted to finally secure the grant.
"Welbeck Welfare is exceptionally excited to have this funding and very pleased with the way Fundsport UK has conducted themselves on our behalf, it is no longer a pipe dream, it is now a reality," he said.
"It has been a community driven project by the trustees of the Miners' Welfare and it has taken a long time and a lot of hard work from many people.
"We hopethis grant will help attract more players to club as it will be the best purpose-built facility in the area.
"But the new complex will not run itself, there is a lot of hard work still to come to keep this facility up and running."
Over the last few years, various consultants have tried and failed in obtaining funding for the project but Kirkby-based Fundsport UK, have netted the funds in less than a year.
The club's coffers has also been boosted by funds provided by Building Better Communities and UK Coal.
This season, the club has around 200 children across 13 junior teams ranging from U7 to U18 boy to go alongside their girls and senior side.
"It has always been our wish to provide football facilities for more children, in the past ourselves and other clubs to pay exorbitant fees for pitches," added Graham.
Welbeck Miners' Welfare Colliery secretary David Key said the funding would also benefit the community.
"Football can bring a community together and although we cannot guarantee it, we are hoping it will attract more people to the club, some of whom might not know as much about the Miners' Welfare and the various functions we put on, so we're hoping it will increase footfall," he said.
"For a long time many of our junior teams have been splintered throughout the district across various pitches in Warsop and Meden Vale, which obviously costs money, but this will give them a base which is another benefit.
"We're extremely grateful to Fundsport UK because we have been persuing this for nearly 10 years so to get this far is a brilliant achievement."
The club along with Fundsport and the Football Foundation will make an announcement and presentation at the football club in the near future.
