The Westfield Folkhouse Young People’s Centre in Mansfield has scooped a major national prize in the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

The youth centre beat the Olympic Stadium and nine other regional finalists to win the Best Community Building category. The Grade 11 listed, 1830s stately home underwent a £6.5m refurbishment to upgrade the building into a world class facility for young people.

Mansfield District Council’s Building Control team and Development Control and Conservation Officer worked in close partnership with architects Lewis & Hickey and constructors G F Tomlinson. The scheme was funded by the Government’s Myplace fund, with Nottinghamshire County Council contributing £1.5m.

Finalists were not judged on architectural beauty, but on the excellence shown from a construction and technical building control point of view. The awards showcased buildings and design teams, who have had to deal with technical issues or difficult sites and come up with innovative and creative solutions.

The categories included every class of building such as domestic extensions, social housing, apartments, schools, hospitals, commercial, retail and industrial properties.

Executive Mayor Tony Egginton said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award. To beat the Olympic Stadium in the Best Community Building category is an enormous achievement.

“This success is testimony to the hard work and professionalism of the Building Control team at MDC and their ability to work proactively with contractors and architects, as well as internally with the Development Control and Conservation teams to produce this award winning development.

“The Council’s Building Control department has always been at the leading edge in the provision of an outstanding building control service.”
