Not much matches Mansfield!

MANSFIELD’S Palace Theatre has revealed the name of a play which will bring a fitting end to a project celebrating the heritage of the town.

Bosses have chosen the title ‘Not Much Matches Mansfield’, which will be instantly recognisable to many as a former slogan for Mansfield Brewery.

The play will mark the culmination of Project 2012: Mamesfelde to Mansfield, a chance for people to celebrate the town’s past, present and future, and will be performed in the Market Place on 14th and 15th July.

Education @ The Palace is organising the project and workshops have been held to gather stories from residents.

Kevin Fegan, playwright for ‘Not Much Matches Mansfield’ said: “I chose the title because it’s playful and fun. It’s a direct legacy from the great days of Mansfield Brewery and many people will remember it as a successful advertising slogan.

“As a writer, I like the title because it’s ambivalent: it expresses the pride Mansfield people feel about their town, but also, ironically, their critical views.”

The team say it will not be a historical play re-enacting scenes from the past, but one which takes its inspiration from the industries and the views of people who have lived and worked in Mansfield over the years.

Kevin added: “In preparation for writing this play, I’ve been busy meeting many Mansfield people including those who have moved here, and I’m overwhelmed by the sense of belonging people genuinely feel about their town. The play will celebrate Mansfield in an entertaining way and will be performed by local people.”

‘Not Much Matches Mansfield’ is the Palace Theatre’s contribution to the council’s ‘Mansfield Art’s Festival’.
