Southwell Minster broadcasts music by its own composers

Southwell Minster Choir will be broadcasting Choral Evensong on BBC Radio Three. The choir regularly takes part in this series, but this broadcast is remarkable for the fact that two of the pieces to be sung will be premieres of new works specially composed by members of the choir. It is most unusual that a Cathedral Choir should have two professional composers in its ranks.

The Introit has been composed by Robert Busiakiewicz, who sings tenor in the Choir. Robert graduated from King’s College London in 2010, when he moved to Southwell, and is already a busy composer in both classical and jazz styles, having received several commissions, and won a number of competitions both in London and in the Midlands. His setting of a text by Milton, Thou, O Spirit, will open the broadcast.

The Anthem, The Song of the Three, is an eight minute setting of a text from the Bible, by Guy Turner, who has been singing bass in the choir for four years. Guy has been composing choral music for thirty years, including on the one hand a Requiem, and on the other, many pieces of comic choral music, some of which have recently been published in a volume called Potato Music. His Tequila Samba is a concert standard and there are currently over 20 performances on Youtube. His recent choral work Under the Wide Sky will be performed by the Nottingham Bach Choir next summer.

The broadcast will be at 3.30pm on Wednesday 19th September, on BBC Radio 3, when the Cathedral Choir will be conducted by Paul Hale, and accompanied by the Cathedral’s new Assistant Director of Music, Simon Hogan.
