RESTAURANT REVIEW: Lucy’s - Independent café a good choice for lunch
Lucy`s Cafe
IT’S a Monday lunchtime in Mansfield town centre and your stomach starts rumbling. But if you don’t fancy food from the usual chain pubs, options are not that plentiful.
This is where Lucy’s - which is very high-ranking on review website Trip Advisor - comes into its own.
It is definitely more of a café than a restaurant, with a large range of sandwich and jacket potato with assorted fillings on the menu, but you can certainly get something substantial if you want it.
As I entered the homely and welcoming café, I took a seat at a little wooden table and was instantly drawn to the specials boards on the wall.
It had some quite unexpected dishes on it and I plumped for soft shell crab, breaded scallops and crab spring rolls, served with a mixed salad and lemon and black pepper and sweet chilli dipping sauces.
The soft shell crab was in a light batter and was lovely, while the crab spring rolls were particularly good dipped in the accompanying sauces.
The scallops were smaller than the scallops I have eaten previously, but were not at all bad, and there was a very generous serving of salad, consisting of lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, pepper and coleslaw.
I was not in the slightest disappointed and thought it good value, if not a bargain, at £8.95.
There is a very tempting selection of cakes on offer at Lucy’s and it would have been rude not to try one while I was there.
I decided on the triple toffee and chocolate crunch cake, which was more like a kind of tart than a cake but which was delicious. A crunchy chocolate base, a layer of toffee and a creamy top scattered with toffee sauce and pieces...divine, especially for only £1.50!
A good cup of coffee finished off a good meal.
I would definitely recommend a trip to Lucy’s and judging by the number of people there, so would many others.
