SUNDAYS in January can be somewhat depressing, but a warming roast dinner can cheer up a dreary day and that was certainly the case when I visited the popular Lambs at the Market.

The restaurant was fairly busy when we arrived and we were met by friendly staff who got us a drink while we waited for our table to be prepared.

Perusing the menu, I was impressed with the choice and could happily have eaten any of the dishes on offer.

I was also impressed with the prices which on a Sunday are £5 for a starter, £9.50 for a main and £5 for a dessert.

I thought this very reasonable for what is a restaurant with a good reputation and which is usually a bit more expensive.

I plumped for the cured venison loin to start, which was served with beetroot relish and pickled carrots.

This was a nice, light plate and was full of flavour. The relish left a nice tingle in your mouth afterwards.

My dining partner had the salmon goujons, which he described as being like posh fishfingers, and which he made short work of. Delicious.

For our mains, we both chose the roast sirloin of Nottinghamshire beef which came with Yorkshire pudding, mash and roast potatoes, market vegetables and gravy.

The roast beef was succulent and the Yorkie was the perfect consistency. It was one of the best Yorkshire puddings I have ever eaten! The portion size was good and we were both quite full by the end.

That did not stop us sharing a pudding though, and we very much enjoyed the triple chocolate brownie, which was very chocolatey and moist. The fact that they had pistachio ice cream to go with it was a bonus. A very satisfying dinner.
