ONLINE VOTE: Sunday date for Mansfield Christmas lights switch-on
IT may only be mid-October, but the countdown to Christmas in Mansfield town centre is well and truly gathering pace.
Many of the main arteries into the Market Place and other town centre streets already have lights in place ahead of the big switch-on, which this year will take place on Sunday 18th November.
It is the first time the Christmas cracker has taken place on a Sunday instead of the traditional Thursday night.
Council bosses hope the move will make it easier for families to attend and take part in the festive celebrations, as well as encourage more shoppers into town during the day.
They also say it will enable more activities to take place throughout the day.
The event itself will include fun-filled festive activities from early afternoon, followed by a stage show in the Market Place - which will be packed with family entertainment, live music and a spectacular fireworks display after the switch-on.
In previous years, headline acts have included Lemar, Chico and Chesney Hawkes.
Michael Robinson, head of regeneration, leisure and marketing at Mansfield District Council said: “Planning is well underway for this year’s event and there will be something for the entire family to enjoy.
“Watch this space for more details about who will be appearing on stage and make sure you put the date in your diary.”
The annual event is organised by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee, which includes the district council, Mansfield BID (Business Improvement District), the Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2 radio station and Chad.
This year, supporting partners are 6 five 2s Taxis, The Hostess restaurant, Queen Elizabeth Trust and Bowrings Transport.
