Natalie Stendall’s 2013 film preview: Man of Steel set to shine
Last year was a bumper year at the cinema with Britain’s very own 007 topping the UK box office in Skyfall. With The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and The Hobbit not far behind, you might be wondering how 2013 can possibly top this selection of blockbusters.
Well here’s how, in our countdown of the most anticipated movies of this year.
10. Star Trek Into Darkness
J.J. Abrams follows up his 2009 Star Trek success in blockbusting IMAX 3D. Abrams is keeping much of the plot under wraps, revealing only that his sequel features a terrorist threat from within Starfleet itself. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) stars as the film’s mystery villain, but fans will have to wait until this May for the secrets to unfold.
9. Anchor Man: The Legend Continues
By the time this long awaited sequel finds its way to the big screen in December, Anchorman fans will have waited almost 10 years for Will Ferrell to reprise his role as everyone’s favourite newsman. Original director and co-writer, Adam McKay, is back for more outrageous comedy.
8. Lincoln
Earning twelve Oscar nominations this year, Steven Spielberg’s epic historical drama follows the last few months of President Lincoln’s life as he works to emancipate slavery. With a stellar cast including Oscar nominees Daniel Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, Lincoln is the one to watch this awards season.
7. The Monuments Men
George Clooney’s first directing project since The Ides Of March, The Monuments Men follows a group of art historians as they try to reclaim art treasures stolen by the Nazis. Released Boxing Day 2013, The Monuments Men features a powerhouse cast including Daniel Craig, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett and The Artist’s Jean Dujardin.
6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The follow up to last year’s box office smash, The Hunger Games, comes the second movie instalment adapted from Suzanne Collins’ teen-fiction trilogy. This dystopian fantasy, sees a rebellion brewing while heroine, Katniss Everdeen, must prepare for yet another televised battle to the death. With Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence reprising her role as the determined Katniss, it looks like Catching Fire can do little wrong.
5. The Wolf Of Wall Street
Martin Scorsese’s crime drama about corruption on Wall Street reunites him with Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time since Shutter Island. Jonah Hill is also set to flex his acting muscle in his first dramatic role following his Oscar nomination for the 2011 baseball drama, Moneyball. With a screenplay from Terence Winter (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire), The Wolf Of Wall Street couldn’t sound any better.
4. The Counselor
Pulitzer prize winning novelist Cormac McCarthy brings his first film script, about a lawyer involved in the drugs trade, to the big screen this winter. Adaptations of McCarthy’s Western Noir thriller, No Country For Old Men, and post-apocalyptic drama, The Road, have garnered critical acclaim, while his play, The Sunset Limited, successfully hit the small screen for Sky Atlantic in 2011. Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Prometheus) directs Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Javier Bardem in what is set to be the thriller of the year.
3. Monsters University
Pixar’s prequel to the 2001 animation, Monsters Inc, follows the early university days of cuddly, blue giant, Sulley, and green, one-eyed monster, Mike. In the last twelve years Pixar’s animation has leaped forward, so expect finely tuned and impressive visuals. With John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprising their voicing roles, Monsters University is perfectly timed for summer.
2. The Great Gatsby
Baz Luhrman’s (Moulin Rouge) epic interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece is this year’s most talked about romance. Postponed from release in 2012, The Great Gatsby, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan (Drive), finally reaches the big screen this May. Opulent sets and luxurious outfits make this the costume drama we’ve all been waiting for.
1. Man Of Steel
This summer the Superman franchise is rebooted and if those trailers are anything to go by, Man Of Steel, embarks on a more ‘serious’ tone in the vein of The Dark Knight trilogy. Director Zack Snyder’s track record might be hit and miss but, with a script from David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) and Christopher Nolan producing, we’re confident Snyder will make it work. With Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) as the bad guy and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Man Of Steel looks hard to beat.
