Mansfield’s got Christmas all wrapped up

This year’s Christmas lights switch on event in Mansfield is set to be a family affair with a day packed full of fun, festive activities for everyone to enjoy.

The Big Switch On takes place on Sunday 18th November and festivities start at 10am with a Christmas Market on Westgate selling everything for homemade gifts to festive food.

During the day there will be children’s craft activities at Mansfield Library and in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre, where kids can make Christmas cards and lanterns.

From 12noon enjoy a selection of festive films, which will be show on the big screens in the Market Place, or listen to the cheerful sounds of local carol singers and brass bands who will be entertaining shoppers on Stockwell Gate.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa and his reindeer, so between 2.30 and 3.15pm come and see the big man himself as he arrives in his sleigh, pulled by two of his trusty reindeer. Children will have the opportunity to meet the reindeers afterwards, plus Drive Dan from Driver Dan’s Story Train will be making a personal appearance.

The Big Switch On Stage Show, hosted by Mansfield 103.2, takes place between 3.30 and 5.15pm in the Market Place. The show will kick off with a performance from Mansfield’s Rock Choir, which is sure to get the party started.

The younger ones in the crowd will be thrilled to see CBeebies’ favourite Driver Dan on stage alongside characters from the Palace Theatre’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs pantomime.

More live music will be provided by The Hot Shots, who will be performing a selection of well known rock and pop covers and Christmas classics.

Local Paralympic heroes Charlotte Henshaw and Ollie Hynd will also appear on stage to join the countdown and switching on of the Christmas lights, which will be followed by a fantastic fireworks display and flurries of snow.

A viewing area for wheelchair users will be available at the reindeer parade and main stage show. To book call 01623 463 733. Places must be booked in advance and are on a first come, first served basis.

The event is organised by the Mansfield Christmas Lights Committee, which includes Mansfield District Council, Mansfield BID, Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2 and the Chad, and our supporting partners 6 five 2s Taxis, The Hostess restaurant, Queen Elizabeth Trust and Bowrings Transport.

Mansfield’s Executive Mayor Tony Egginton, said: “Mansfield’s Christmas Lights Switch On event is one of the Town Centre’s biggest events and this year’s top entertainment line up means it’s going to be the best yet!

“I really look forward to seeing so many people celebrating the official countdown to Christmas in Mansfield and enjoying the huge range of festive activities set to take place during the day.”
