MEMBERS of a dance academy in Sutton are gearing up for a national street dance competition in Nottingham.

Twisted Techniques, which is based at the Claire Louise School of Dance on Outram Street, has nominated dance crew Unique for the Enter The Battle event and members will compete against talented dancers from across the UK.

Crew members will try to wow judges - made up of well-known faces from the street dance world - with their performances at the Harvey Hadden sports complex on 22nd October.

Twisted Techniques is a partnership between dance expert Claire Malpass and her partner Lee Ellis, who is an experienced street dancer. The academy caters for a growing interest in street styles such as funk, hip-hop, house and break dance.

Said Claire: “We can’t wait for Unique to show the rest of the UK what they can do. It’s not very often a competition of this type is seen outside of London and it’s fantastic to have something like this to work towards on our doorstep.

“This is going to be a real test for the crew, especially performing in front such a prestigious judging panel.”

And Lee says street dance is attracting more youngsters nowdays.

“There is a lot of curiosity about street dance and a lot of media coverage of it,” he said.

Youth worker Lee has also been taking his skills to young people in schools - and he says the feedback has been positive.

He said: “Not every kid wants to play football. It really works the physical body and the creative mind as well.”

l Enter the Battle also includes free running, extreme martial arts, BMX, skateboarding and more and tickets are on sale. For more details visit www.enterthebattle.co.uk or search for Enter the Battle on Facebook.
