Alfreton Party in the Park called off
ALFRETON’S Party in the Park, scheduled for today (Sunday), has joined the long list of summer festivals to fall victim to the summer washout.
The decision to call off the event planned was taken by Derbyshire County Council’s emergency planning team due to the state of Alfreton Park’s grounds after a spate of heavy rain.
But organiser Liam Connell said it would be business as usual for the event next year.
“We on the committee are all gutted,” said Mr Connell, who is secretary of the event’s planning committee.
“We put a year’s planning into it.
“I have had to re-fund all the stall holders and was on the phone for nearly five hours yesterday.”
But luckily the committee had taken out cancellation insurance, he said.
Mr Connell said the day normally cost its voluntary organising committee about £15,000 to stage and this year would have marked its tenth anniversary.
He added: “It has just been an exceptional year but it will be back same time, same place next year.
A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: “We attended a site meeting with the organisers and with representatives from Amber Valley Borough Council.
It was decided the event should be cancelled due to the state of the ground following heavy rain (last) Friday.”
