I WOULD like to thank Coun Kirkham for his concise reply (Chad, 28th May) to my previous letter.
It is disappointing to read that money is readily available for pet projects such as cycle tracks but not for the necessities of life - decent roads and pavements.

I accept that Ethelbert Avenue and Warren Road, Kirkby, are not at the top of list for repair. That is not my concern.

The truth is that Nottinghamshire County Council have failed Kirkby for many, many years with serious under funding of road repairs.

Regarding the 80 metres resurfaced on Warren Road, this was a cheap job, poorly done. Within a few days grass was growing in the gutters and is now well established. Nothing was done about the dangerous kerbs, which are crumbling away. Fifteen are almost non-existent. Seven kerbs were replaced on Ethelbert Avenue - it took four men five days to complete a poor job.

I am sorry, Coun Kirkham, your letter only highlights the failure of Nottinghamshire County Council and its treatment of Kirkby.

GORDON BARKES,
Ethelbert Avenue, Kirkby.
