HOW sad to see the decline in shopping facilities in Mansfield.
While walking down Leeming Street recently I counted five boarded-up shops and these were once thriving businesses. Heaven knows what the total is across town?
Similarly the occupancy of market stalls has been drastically reduced, after once having a market practically every day. I personally believe the reason for this decline is the high overheads, such as council tax, wage bills, gas and electricity and water.

How do we combat this situation? We could start with a freeze on council tax.

E. ARMSTRONG,
Warsop.

Mr Gummy,

All this is happening BECAUSE of the previous freeze on council tax. The Independent Forum put a 0% raise in council tax in one year on purely political grounds, and then lo and behold, their coffers runs dry, and so they have to make up the shortfall by imposing extra duties on the good, honest local tradespeople.

Why else is there no investment into town whilst playgrounds and public toilets were being closed down? Just about the only sensible thing they've done is implement ex-Cllr Winterton's ideas about the free parking, and claimed the credit as their own.

Just like their new County Councillors are claiming two salaries when they were voted in on an expenses reducing ticket - all flim-flam pie, and they've not even put a cherry on top to make it sweeter.
