OVER the past couple of weeks the issue of the Special Access Permits, the 'Green Badge' and disabled parking in the centre of Mansfield has been aired in the pages of Chad.
However, I do feel that there has been a certain amount of disinformation put about by various 'spokespersons.'
I was only awarded my disability 'Blue Badge' last year but I was not informed of any Special Access Permit for parking in Mansfield or o
ther areas of Nottinghamshire at the time of issue.

Council bosses are quoted as saying that the restricted parking zone and the 'Green Permit' have been in force for some time. Why was I not informed at the time of issue of my Blue Badge? Co Coun Helen Holt who campaigns for the disabled in Mansfield and Ashfield states in your article of 2nd July that the disabled should have been informed. However, I was not informed of the requirements of the 'Green Badge' until I had received a penalty notice.

In your article 'Green' only to park your car, there are several misleading statements from a council 'spokesperson'. He or she states that the signs at the entrance to the pedestrianised area state that only green special access permit holders may access the area between Sundays and Wednesdays.

I would dispute this statement as the only place that the Special Access Permits sign is used in Mansfield that I can find is in Church Street adjacent to the Market square. At all other parking areas in the precinct bays that are marked out on the ground with the disabled logo are signed 'Permit Holders Only' as shown in your article on page 2, Chad 2nd July. The signs in Church Street are not within the rules anyway as there are no bays marked out on the ground.

It would seem to me that Nottinghamshire County Council, their 'spokespersons' and employees need to get their acts together and inform the public of the correct facts, otherwise nothing but confusion and injustice will prevail.

Please, fellas, get it right.

JND,
Kirkby.

first and formost let me say how sorry i feel that you and maybe a few others have been penalised for your assumptions that you can park anywhere there are invalid bays.
the green special permit card as i know has been in force for over 10years as my father was alive and required one.
In defence of Mansfield Council, the signposts informing where you can park and for how long speak loud and clear.Leaming street is a green card zone, also Queen street, there are sign posts on these streets giving the information you require.
To be eligible for a special parking permit you need
to be recieving full mobility allowance, as we all know being an invalid takes many forms.

You would not go into a carpark and automaticaly assume becausethey had invlid bays that you could park free that would be a foolish act to do, so why did you assume you could do this in Mansfield town centre, and ignorance is no excuse.
The bays on Church street are marked out using different coloured bricks which i think is very tidy and attractive , not all of us need the ugly paint on the ground reminding us of how we are.
You dont believe every street should be marked with a 30 miles per hour speed sign but assume even foreign visiters will obey our laws.
It is your responsibility to find out what you can and cannot do, as it is in your own interests to search this information out,as one would say seek and ye shall find.

I would like to appologise for some of my previous comments i made. After a visit into town with my daughter this afternoon, i now realise that both Queens Street and Leeming Street can be used by people with the 'Blue' badges.
However, in 1997, these streets could only be used by 'Green' badge holders only as my father had this badge.
Church Street and West Gate, however, remain as parking for Special Access Permit or 'Green' badge holder only.
