THE JURY trying suspected drugs gang leader Gary Hardy has been told to not let the heavy security prescence surrounding him to influence its verdict.
Each day Hardy is brought to court from prison as part of a high-security police convoy and is flanked in the dock by between three and four security officers.

Outside the courtroom, all members of the public are required to surrender mobile phones and provide details of their home address to police officers.

Trevor Burke QC, who today opended the case for the defence, told the 12-man jury they must deliver their verdict based upon the evidence put before them.

He said: "The security in place for Gary Hardy cannot inflence you in your decision. When the public see the police convoy coming through the streets, they will inevitably wonder what dangerous man is inside the van.

"You must not think like this. If you take that view, it would be a tremendous injustice."
