Newmarket based recing expert Georgie Thorogood runs through the card at Nottingham
With a double header of meetings covered in last week's column, I hope that some of you followed my advice and layed (bet against) Pawan on Betdaq for his race at Southwell which may have made up for the lack of success in my tips at Nottingham the f
ollowing day.

Racing comes from both Nottingham and Southwell on Wednesday and Thursday again this week.

At the time of writing, final declarations are only available for the flat race card at Nottingham so I will concentrate my tips on the two feature races there.

The first contest on the marathon eight-race card is the European Breeders Fund Maiden race for two year olds, over five furlongs.

Two of the ten runners are making their first race-course appearance in this race, with all of the others having already notched up varying levels of experience.

Of the horses who have got previous form, I think Fitz Flyer is the one to beat having run well behind a smart horse of Richard Fahey's, Master Noverre, in the Gimcrack earlier this season.

He is taking a drop in class and despite him being likely to go off favourite (currently 7/4 with Boylesports) I would back him to win. Eric Alston was successful in this race last year with an unraced filly and he saddles one of the two debutants this year as well.

Makaykla is currently 33/1 with Boylesports and I would recommend backing her each way from a yard renowned for their success with sprinters.

The 3.40pm handicap is the second of the class 4 races of the day.

This time a field of 16 older horses (three year olds and above) will head to post for this contest over a mile and two furlongs.

With horses representing many of the top yards lining up in this race, there are plenty who have good chances.

The two runners who have caught my eye however are both from slightly smaller Northern yards. On their last appearances, Wind Shuffle and Persian Peril finished first and third respectivelty in a race on heavy ground at Ayr 18 days ago.

Jim Goldie's five year old enjoyed the testing surface and is likely to relish this soft ground, and I suspect that Persian Peril will struggle to reverse the form on this occasion.

I would recommend backing both Wind Shuffle to win, and Alan Swinbank's Persian Peril each/way. Both of these are currently at 10/1 with Boylesports.

For those of you who like to spread bet, I would suggest buying (bet higher) SP's for this meeting with Sporting Index, as both of these races have historically returned big price winners.
