The all-weather flat season is well underway now, and readers of this column will hopefully have been in the money following last week's meeting at Southwell.
My recommendation to lay (bet against) Michael Jarvis's Today's The Day, proved correct as the filly ran a disappointing sort of race to finish third behind Holberg.
Dante Deo, the David Barron trained runner I flagged up, was not quite experience
d enough to trouble the judge on this occassion, but would definitely be one to keep an eye on for the future. The Irish trained Crystal Crown was sent off the 3/1 favourite but was beaten by Marco Botti's Avertis at a better value 8/1.
This week's meeting at Southwell on Tuesday stages eight races, two of which are divisions of an amateur race - sometimes quite unreliable contests from a betting perspective.
The 1.10pm race is a claiming race over seven furlongs for two year olds, with a field of 10 runners.
The two favourites are likely to be Smalljohn and Kinigi, both of which will be short prices and I would be tempted to look elsewhere for better value.
Gay Kelleway does well with her all-weather team and with top class all-weather jockey Chris Catlin aboard her Rose of Coma, I would suggest backing this one at 8/1 with Boylesports assuming she handles the surface.
The 2.10pm race is a novice stakes, again for two year olds, but this time over one mile. There are only five runners going to post for this contest, with Sir Mark Prescotts Kind Heart, currently priced as the odds on favourite.
I would suggest laying this (betting against) on Betdaq as I suspect the extra two furlongs will stretch her stamina too much. Instead, I would suggest backing relative outsider Captain Imperial each way.
Tom Tate's horses have been in good form in both codes and the 7/1 currently to be found with Boylesports, he seems much better value and with a win over seven furlongs in soft ground, is likely to be able to stay the mile around Southwell.
For those of you who like to spread bet, I would advise selling (betting lower) on SP's for this meeting with Sporting Index.
