Three generations of Somercotes cake makers are celebrating after wowing the judges at a national sugarcraft competition.
Jamie Brooks (38) the founder of The Mirage Cake Company at Heanor, won a bronze medal in The London Cake International competition last week.
The icing came when his nephew Joseph Blackhall (25) clinched a gold and his daughter Summer (6) put the cherry on top with a bronze medal.
The trio were competing against hundreds of cake enthusiasts from around the world in the competition at the ExCel Arena.
Jamie said: “It is a huge event and we were up against some of the best cake decorators in the world. I won a gold when I entered last year but Joe beat me last week.
“We are all very proud of Summer, who won a medal with her first entry.”
Jamie and Joseph won medals in the Class G Decorative Exhibit section. They mixed with TV stars from the rising world of bake offs and TV cookery shows as their efforts were judged.
The London Cake International attracts cake enthusiasts, renowned industry experts and professional cake decorators and sugarcrafters from across the world.
Jamie’ creation - a 5ft tall three layered cake was based on Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree.
Joseph’s inspiration came from a galaxy far, far away, with a life size icing sculpture of Star Wars hero Yoda.
“It was amazingly detailed and took hours and hours of work,” said Jamie.
Summer entered the under 12 section with her birthday cake featuring children’s character Zelf.
Proud dad Jamie, said: ”Summer was at school when we rang her on Friday to tell her she had won the medal. She was very excited when she found out.
She has been creating things out of icing since she was small.
“She is carrying on the family tradition I learned how to bake from my mother.”
Former fork-lift driver Jamie started the Mirage Cake Company on Derby Road Heanor, last August.
He said: “We can make whatever the customer wants an we have based our cakes on all sorts of wild and wacky things from boots to tanks to tractors. We cater for all celebrations weddings and birthdays.”
The Mirage Cake Company even has its own video channel www.youtube.com/themiragecakecompany, where the making of Joseph’s cake: Star Wars Episode 1: Rise of the Jedi Cake can be seen.
