STAFF and pupils at Kirkby's Ashfield School are celebrating after being given a top award for their commitment to arts education.
They scooped the Arts Council England's prestigious Artsmark Silver award and the school is among 1,649 schools receiving it in England this year.

Headteacher Dick Vasey said: "Our students have really enjoyed working with professional musicians, taking part in Samba and African drumming sessions and dance workshops led by professional dancers and choreographers from the Yasmin Vardman Dance Company."

And head of creative arts Martin Humphrey added: "It is a tribute to the hard work, enthusiasm and excellence of both teachers and students at Ashfield School that we have gained this outstanding award."

A school must dedicate a minimum of 10 per cent of its curricular teaching time to the arts to receive an Artsmark and 12 per cent wins Artsmark Silver, while 15 per cent qualifies for Artsmark Gold.
