MANSFIELD is fortunate to possess a first-rate public arena in its Market Place.
But its potential for staging crowd-pulling attractions of more than a day's duration has rarely been tested in recent times.

  • Big wheel starts turning

Not so at the moment, however, with the arrival of the Big Wheel.

It might not be on the scale of the London Eye, or the one that proved so popular in Nottingham recently, but it's still impressive and offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a spectacular bird's eye view of the town centre and the surrounding area, and at a very reasonable charge.

It would be nice to feel this could be just the start of many similar large-scale novelty events to successfully draw people into Mansfield as an 'added value' factor.

Where there's a wheel . . .?

THE name 'Lucas of Mansfield' has been inextricably linked to the town since the end of the First World War, serving generations of local motorists and providing employment for many people over those 90 years.

So it's very sad that the firm has announced this week that it has become a casualty of the economic downturn and is to cease trading.
Businesses like Lucas are the lifeblood of the town.

It has to be the fervent hope that matters start to improve before any others that are also struggling find it impossible to carry on.
