WHAT a letdown. How on earth did the Government manage to promise free swimming for all under-16s for two years without first doing the sums properly?
As a consequence, Mansfield District Council finds itself in the embarrassing position of having to opt out of the much-trumpeted Free Swimming Programme because it won't receive anywhere near enough money from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to cover the projected cost.

The situation is made far worse, of course, because of the success of Rebecca Adlington and Sam Hynd in the Olympics.and Paralympics respectively.

These two have given swimming an unprecedented boost. It's a smack in the face for youngsters across Mansfield and Ashfield who have been inspired by their exploits.

What a shame they are now going to be disappointed.
