Councillors' bad behaviour is regrettable

LIVELY debate is part and parcel of council meetings. That's how it should be.
Councillors who never do any more than turn up at meetings are wasting their time and, more importantly, that of the people who elected them to look after their interests.

On the other hand, those who consistently fail to show proper respect for fellow members and the rules of debating do no favours to themselves or the democratic process.

It's most regrettable that the situation at Ashfield District Council has got to the stage where the chief executive and leader have felt it necessary to write to councillors, effectively telling them to behave themselves in a civilised manner in future.

If they fail to comply, there is a higher authority that can deal effectively with them, of course – the voters.
