THE Red Bar and Carvery in Mansfield is struggling to find its identity, but still manages to impress with decent food and a pleasant atmosphere.
After checking the menu on the eatery's website, I was expecting to be able to chose from a variety of pastas, pizzas, and Mexican-style food.

But on arrival we were told that menu was out of date and instead we had the choice of a carvery or a reduced menu, from which I opted for the chicken fajitas with home-cut chips.

Although at first I thought the meal was a little pricey at £10.80, I was impressed with the quality and quantity.

My dining partner, however went for one of the home-made margherita pizzas which was tasty and more reasonable at £5.75.

We also decided to treat ourselves to desert and my chocolate waffles and ice cream were luxurious enough to justify the £4.50 price tag. But it's a shame they don't offer a cheaper option for those who want a small scoop of cream as a treat after their main meal.

The venue combines the decor of a smart, upmarket eatery with a traditional bar complete with a number of plasma screens to watch the football.

And although fans seemed to appreciate them we felt they took something away from our dining experience. We had the chance to take part in a pub quiz at half-time while we were eating –– and although it was enjoyable it highlighted The Red's confusing image.

We also found it a bit odd that our waitress could order deserts for us, but the mains had to be bought from the bar –– so we ended up with two bills.

All things said, The Red makes for an extremely pleasant night out for those who can accept it for what it is, although I do think they should do more to separate the restaurant and bar.

I would certainly like to go back to test the new carvery, which included a pasta dishes or turkey and a choice of traditional vegetables priced just £3.50.

I would like to thank you for your positive comments made regarding the Red Bar & Carvery in Mansfield. It is great to know that the local media took time to visit our establishment and highlight the services we have to offer to the people of Mansfield.

I would like to comment that Wednesday is our official Quiz Night as advertised on posters and Banners outside as well as in your paper in the past.

We were faced with the dileama of having our National team England play on the Wednesday you visited and as not to dissapoint our customers that come along for the quiz we opted for the half time quiz which worked very well.

I am sure you will recall on the night diners were asked if they had any objections to the Football audio being played.

The new menu had only been in place 4 days prior your visit and i am pleased to say the website is now fully updated with the new Carvery menu. And the new menu for the upstairs dining room will available from Friday 22nd February when The Red celebrates its first Birthday .

We look forward to you returning to sample our new Carvery and as the increase in customers shows this is already a great success.

Again, thank you so much...
