LOVERS of high-quality but reasonably-priced Indian food could certainly do worse than the Chand restaurant on the outskirts of Mansfield town centre.
The interior is pleasant and the friendly staff seated us quickly, but it was a shame there were not more people in the restaurant on a Friday lunchtime.

There is an extensive wine list and menu with popular northern Indian dishes and a good selection of vegetarian food, as well as set menus.

Our starter of spicy popadoms and a selection of pickles arrived promptly and at £2 for the both of us it was extremely good value.

The food itself had a good flavour and there was plenty to keep us going until our main course arrived.

For my main dish, I opted for lamb saag, consisting of generous-sized pieces of lamb with spinach and spices (priced at £6.50), which I really enjoyed along with a garlic naan bread.

Meanwhile, my dining companion chose the mushroom biryani (priced at £5.50), which she assured me was delicious.

The portions were very generous so we decided to skip dessert and get the bill, which, at £19.60 for two people including drinks, seemed very reasonable.

The staff, who were very polite and discreet throughout, made my dining experience extremely enjoyable and although the restaurant was very quiet this was not a reflection on the quality or service.

Overall, this is a good place to go either with a large group or for an intimate dinner or pre-theatre meal.

  • The Chand is located on Toothill Road and is open every day from noon-2pm and 6-11pm.
