IF you are anything like me you have probably already had at least one Christmas dinner in the run up to the big day.
So, when someone suggested we break with tradition for our festive work outing and try The Monsoon Tandoori and Balti restaurant in Mansfield town centre, I was a little relieved.

Not far off the beaten track, on Midworth Street, The Monsoon's decor is modern but comfortable and the overall impression is clean and crisp.

The restaurant also has a free car park at the rear, so is perfect for those wanting just a meal out or, because of its location, those who would like to make a night of it.

As our party entered, we were greeted by the friendly staff and immediately shown to our seats where our drinks orders were taken.

Shortly after our drinks arrived and the waiter took our orders and brought out pickle trays and poppadoms.

The menu had the usual dishes which have made curry a national favourite, like chicken tikka massala, but there were some exotic sounding house specials for the more adventurous.

I opted for garlic chicken with a plain naan bread, deciding I would probably not be able to manage rice as well – and I was right as the portions were quite large.

My food was full of flavour and everyone else seemed to be enjoying their choices too - with naan breads, various rices and some colourful culinary delights all being tucked into with vigour.

The service was speedy and the proceedings were accompanied by some lively Indian music in the background – which was a welcome change from the cheesy Christmas tunes being played to death at the moment.

At the end of the meal, we were all so full no one had room for a dessert, but we did manage the After Eight chocolates which came with the bill and were a nice surprise.

And they were not the only pleasant surprise as the bill came to only just over £75 with drinks for our party of seven.

Altogether our alternative Christmas banquet went very well and I would highly recommend The Monsoon to any curry fans out there.
