It is the first tremor to hit the area since September 2002, when the effects of a quake in Dudley in the West Midlands was felt by thousands of householders.

Already many Chad readers and website users have contacted us with their comments, including:

Tracy Mounsey, of Creswell, told us: "I felt the earthquake at 12.57am this morning whilst watching the TV. I thought a train or lorry was coming towards the house ... the whole house moved and everything was shaking....it was scary."

Sam, of Sutton, said: "It felt like a lorry had hit the house and there was a type of loud rubble. My wife said she felt like the house moved around her. It knocked our budgie off his perch and he was terrified, flapping around the bottom of cage. Very weird!"

Mark Seabrooke, of Mansfield, added: "My wife and I were awoken at 01.00 by the whole house shaking."

Join the discussion below and we will publish a selection of your comments in next week's Chad.

I was too sleepy to really know what was going on, beforehand anyway. I couldn't sleep for hours after, the adrenaline I suppose. I didn't quite believe it until I read it again this morning. Thankfully my house is fine. Dog's a bit spooked though!

Wow! Thought it was a train going by at first, then realised I don't live near a rail line. Everything was shaking, ornaments fell of a shelf. This was worse than the one in the 90s in Mansfield!

Our house was shaking for around 10 seconds, it was very scary and I honestly thought the house was coming down!! It was worse than the one in 2002. Thankfully, we had no damage - but it could have been a lot worse.
