A MANSFIELD drug addict caught trying to steal a stereo from a car in Sutton has been jailed for 18 months.
Simon Paine (39), of Tuckers Lane, had a 24-year addiction and convictions for more than 100 offences, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

Plain-clothed police officers saw two men acting suspiciously near a car on Dalestorth Road on 27th October.

One of the car windows had been smashed. Both men ran off but were arrested.

Prosecutor Kevin Kavanagh told the court on Thursday that a screwdriver and torch were recovered nearby.

The other man was being dealt with by the magistrates but Paine was in breach of a 12-month suspended prison sentence for two shop burglaries.

He admitted attempted theft from the car and the court was told his criminal record included 68 previous thefts.

In mitigation, it was said he had been making some progress on a community order after being addicted to drugs for a long time.

Judge Joan Butler activated the suspended sentence and added a further six months to it.
