A MAN has admitted slapping his wife during an argument about an alleged girlfriend.
Thirty-six-year-old Akbal Bains lashed out and struck his wife Gurvinder's face and neck at their marital home on King's Stand in Mansfield –– an incident which took place in front of his mother.

His mother stepped in between the couple but Bains slapped his wife again –– knocking her glasses off, a Mansfield court was told.

Bains, who is currently living on Clumber Street, Warsop, denied hitting his wife a third time, but admitted a charge of common assault when he appeared at a Mansfield court on Friday.

The row on 5th July was said to be over an extra-marital affair Gurvinder Bains believed her husband was having, the court was told.
Mrs Bains had alleged that she had been victim of physical and emotional abuse throughout the marriage.

In mitigation, Bain's solicitor Sulma Mansuri said there were cultural issues they should consider when hearing the evidence.

The court was told the couple had been together since November last year after an introduced –– also known as arranged –– marriage, but Bains denied he had been violent before this incident.

"Quite often domestic violence is one of the few ways to get out of one of these marriages –– a husband having an affair is sometimes not accepted as reason for divorce," said Ms Mansuri.

"I'm not suggesting for a moment that Mrs Bains wanted this incident to happen. What I am trying to say is there was an atmosphere in the house. My client feels that his wife was building up to this."

Magistrates will sentence Bains on 7th August.
