A KIRKBY man branded a 'vile and violent woman beater' by a judge has been jailed indefinitely.
Michael Smedley (49), of Chapel Street, must serve at least four years in prison before he can even be considered for parole.

Judge Jonathan Teare told him at nottingham Crown Court today that he had demonstrated his nature over a period of 23 years.

Smedley admitted physically and sexually assaulting one woman earlier this year and had prior convictions for beating three other women in the past.

The court was told he had punched one victim in the mouth knocking out a tooth, beat her with a slipper and burnt her body with lighted matches.

Another woman had hot cooking oil put on her chin and had her arm broken, while a further victim had been spat at and headbutted.

In mitigation, it was said alcohol had played a part in Smedley losing his control and he was remorseful.
