BERNARD and Dawn know how difficult it is to build up the courage to get out of the house and find help for their mental health difficulties.
And as two of Central Notts MIND's regular clients they have this week spoken to Chad about how they have overcome their issues.

Bernard first started visiting MIND's centre in Mansfield around five years ago to gain friendship and support.

Since his first visit, general manager of Central Notts MIND, Girish Ravat, says Bernard's confidence has gradually built up and he now enjoys attending the charity's social clubs with friends he has made through MIND.

"I've been working with Bernard for the past six months and have seen his confidence continue to grow," says Girish.

"He is a jolly character who likes to mix with others at the centre and always appears pleased to be here enjoying activities and chatting to his friends."

And Bernard says he feels safe and welcome at the centre, which he visits regularly to help overcome his mental health difficulties.

"I come to Central Notts MIND for the company and support that is given by all the staff, volunteers and other members," said Bernard.

"When I come here I always feel welcome and I enjoy having my meals here too.

"Everybody here is kind and caring and if I don't turn up one day, people ring me and show that they are concerned.

"We are always looking for new members and will always make them feel welcome."

Meanwhile, fellow user Dawn has now built enough confidence to support others in a similar situation to herself.

Dawn says Central Notts MIND has given her the support she needed to deal with her mental health difficulties and she now enjoys helping others do the same.

"I have found friendship, support, love and kindness when I need it most," says Dawn. "The womens' group was supported by a project leader, but we have now developed to running the group ourselves and organising activities.

"The support from Central Notts MIND is always there if we need it and I find this very helpful.

"Our womens' group and our friendship is strong and this is because we are allowed time and space to understand each other at the activity centre."

•Anyone wanting more information about the activity centres or who would like to organise a charity event or make a donation to Central Notts MIND should contact Girish on Mansfield 658044.

•Central Notts MIND is looking for trustees to sit on its Mansfield board of directors. The role would involve attending a monthly meeting and helping to make strategic decisions. Preferably trustees would have experience of voluntary work or running a business. For more information contact Girish on Mansfield 658044.
