CONSTRUCTION work has begun on a landmark housing and office development in Mansfield town centre.
Developers at Highgrange Homes have begun initial work at the former Mansfield Shoe Co factory, on Stockwell Gate, which they aim to complete within 18 months.

The development will include 87 apartments, four houses and 20,000 sq ft of office and retail space and will be called First Central.

Operations director Andrew Littler told Chad there had been some delays in starting work because of design considerations, but the project will now quickly take shape.

He said: "We expect to be up to the roof by the end of the year. We are very excited that it is underway. We have sold all the commercial space and sold half the residential units."

The Mansfield Shoe Co factory closed in 2004 with the loss of more than 40 jobs and the 100-year-old building was knocked down in 2006.
